Electoral Commission Unveils Roadmap for Special Interest Groups Elections Ahead of 2025/2026 General Elections

These elections, encompassing Older Persons, Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), and Youth, are a vital part of ensuring comprehensive representation within the nation's democratic framework.

As Uganda gears up for the 2025/2026 General Elections, the Electoral Commission (EC) has officially released the roadmap for the elections of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) committees.

These elections, encompassing Older Persons, Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), and Youth, are a vital part of ensuring comprehensive representation within the nation’s democratic framework.

According to a press release issued on May 23rd, 2025, the electoral program is slated to begin on June 2nd, 2025, with the nomination of candidates for Village SIGs Committees.

The process will continue throughout the months of June, July, and August, culminating in the National Youth Council elections and the selection of regional delegates for national councils by the end of August.

The phased approach is designed to guarantee meticulous organization and inclusivity, allowing eligible participants from across the country to engage effectively.

Key Dates and Activities:

The roadmap outlines specific dates for different levels of elections:

  • Village Level Elections:
    • Nominations: June 2nd – 10th, 2025
    • Campaigns: June 12th – 14th, 2025
    • Polling:
      • Older Persons: June 16th
      • PwDs: June 17th
      • Youth: June 19th
  • Parish/Ward Level Elections:
    • Nominations: June 26th – 27th
    • Polling: July 2nd – 7th
  • Sub-county, Town, and Municipal Division Elections:
    • Nominations: July 9th – 10th
    • Polling: July 14th – 18th
  • Municipality and City Division Elections:
    • Nominations: July 24th – 25th
    • Polling: July 30th – August 4th
  • District and City Level Elections:
    • Nominations: August 11th – 12th
    • Polling: August 15th – 19th
  • National Youth Council and Regional Delegate Elections:
    • National Youth Council Elections: August 27th – 29th
    • Regional Delegates to National Councils: August 25th and 27th

The Electoral Commission has issued a call to action, urging all stakeholders, including aspiring candidates, political parties, civil society organizations, and the general public, to actively participate in the electoral process while adhering to the established timelines and guidelines.

Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, has reiterated the Commission’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that the elections are conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.

He also emphasized the critical importance of the Special Interest Groups’ representation in Uganda’s democratic processes, highlighting their invaluable contribution to inclusive governance.
