Uganda sees significant 7.31% surge in 2025 national exam candidature, UNEB reports over 1.4 million provisional registrations

In a separate directive, UNEB urged Heads of UCE Centres to diligently compile and submit Continuous Assessment (CA) scores for both Senior 3 and Senior 4 learners.

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) today announced a substantial increase in provisional candidature for the 2025 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE), and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE). As of July 3rd, 2025, a total of 1,412,248 students have provisionally registered for the national exams across all three levels.

This figure represents a significant increase of 103,250 candidates, or 7.31%, compared to the 2024 candidature of 1,308,998. The provisional figures come after the conclusion of the first phase of late registration on June 30th.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to accessible education, UNEB’s statement revealed that 719,721 (51%) of the registered candidates are sponsored under various Universal Education Programs. These include the Universal Primary Education (UPE), Universal Secondary Education (USE), and the Uganda Post O’Level and Training Program (UPOLET).

Principal Public Relations Officer, Jennifer Kalule-Musamba, reiterated the Board’s call for continued vigilance from school administrators. “Registration of candidates continues until the end of July with a surcharge. We encourage Heads of Centres to ensure that they register all the prospective learners, so that no learner is left out,” Kalule-Musamba stated. She also confirmed that amendments to submitted registrations can still be made free of charge through the online portal until the end of July.

In a separate directive, UNEB urged Heads of UCE Centres to diligently compile and submit Continuous Assessment (CA) scores for both Senior 3 and Senior 4 learners. These scores are required to be submitted by the time the school term closes, emphasizing the importance of ongoing student evaluation in the examination process.

The surge in candidature underscores the growing participation in Uganda’s education system, reflecting ongoing efforts to expand access to learning opportunities across the country.
