The two oil and gas police officers of counterterrorism guarding the residence of Irumba Clovis Bright, the director of exploration at the Petroleum Authority of Uganda, have been arrested for losing two rifles (SAR no. T1102 23cz0036-60393 and SAR 61347), all loaded with 120 rounds of live ammunition, while on duty at their principal’s home in Katale Bukwenda cell, Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso district.
The Katale Police Post, under Nateete Police Division, registered the theft case as SD REF:2/4/5/2025. The incident happened on Saturday, 03/05/2025, at around 22:22 from Irumba’s residence in Katale Bukwenda cell.
One of the suspects, Officer Opio Godfrey, alleges that he carried the two guns to the veranda because his colleague was caught up by time in Kampala, and at around 22:00, the driver of the principal hooted. Opion then left the rifles covered with a warm suit to go and open for the vehicle; on coming back, he found the rifles were missing.
Police said the residence has no CCTV cameras and it’s in a concrete wall fence, and that the principal stays with his wife and kids alone in the house. The police statement doesn’t say if Irumba and his family were in the residence.
The case of theft of two rifles has been registered. The two police officers don’t stay within the same residence. They just come for the duty with their guns.
The canine team arrived at the scene when it was already raining, and the dog couldn’t do much. The suspects have been arrested, and enquiries into the matter continue.
