3,100 boda boda cyclists acquire learner’s riding permits
The huge number has been attributed to the consistent traffic police operation on bodaboda riders which began on Thursday 12th January 2023, targeting riders without valid permits or licenses.
Traffic police have confirmed the registration of 3,100 boda boda cyclists at the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV) so as to acquire learners’ riding permits.
The huge number has been attributed to the consistent traffic police operation on boda boda riders which began on Thursday 12th January 2023, targeting riders without valid permits or licenses.
According to traffic police spokesperson Faridah Nampiima, there are several boda boda riders who operate on the road without permits or licenses and were warned to be issued with EPS tickets for the offence.
“This operation is still ongoing. It has yielded results. We are grateful and we thank all those who have complied. We have registered 3,100 riders, who have tested at the IOV acquiring learner’s permits in just these 3 weeks. This is very good,” she noted.
Nampiima warned those who have not yet complied to effectively do so, citing a group of boda boda riders in Kiseka and some parts of Makindye, who have adamantly refused to comply with the law.
She reiterated that the operations on boda bodas are being conducted in phases, where phase one involves operations on reflect jackets and crash helmets, phase two which is on, is involving driving licenses and phase 3 will be later communicated.
According to the directorate, from 6th February to 11th February, a total number of 3,500 riders were arrested on the road with their motorcycles. Out of these 3,045 were issued with EPS tickets, which paid for and later got their motorcycles.
