Gov’t to manage garbage at Menvu, plans relocation for affected Kiteezi Families
The meeting, attended by several ministers, mayors, Chief Administrative Officers, Town Clerks, and development partners, concluded with a commitment to start managing waste at Menvu without delay.
The Ugandan government has resolved to immediately begin garbage management at Menvu, a decision aimed at addressing the pressing waste challenges in the Kampala metropolitan area.
This resolution was made during a meeting chaired by the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala.
The meeting, attended by several ministers, mayors, Chief Administrative Officers, Town Clerks, and development partners, concluded with a commitment to start managing waste at Menvu without delay.
The decision comes in response to the recent cessation of garbage dumping in Entebbe, which had become a significant concern, even affecting operations at Entebbe International Airport.
Entebbe Municipality Mayor, Rulinda Fabric Brad, expressed concern over the situation, noting that while the municipality had offered a temporary solution, the area had been turned into an unsanctioned dumping site, compromising the country’s image.
Julius Mutebi Nsubuga, Mayor of Kira Municipality, emphasized that local leaders have been awaiting government action on the broader issue of garbage management across the country.
Meanwhile, Ssebuwufu John Mary, Executive Secretary of Planning and Civil Works at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), highlighted the challenges faced by Kampala due to underfunding from the central government, despite the city being the face of Uganda.
In response, Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, and Minister of Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, pledged to work swiftly to address the waste management crisis.
After extensive discussions, First Deputy Prime Minister Kadaga assured the public that the government is in control of the situation. Garbage dumping and management will be temporarily shifted to Menvu as the government finalizes plans for the Kiteezi area.
The government is also developing a national garbage management plan, which will be implemented across other cities and towns to prevent future crises like the one experienced at Kiteezi. This plan is expected to provide a more sustainable and efficient approach to waste management nationwide.
