Airtel Uganda’s MD Manoj Murali to step down after transformative tenure

Since taking charge in October 2020, Murali has overseen substantial revenue growth, with Airtel Uganda’s earnings rising from UGX1.296 trillion to UGX1.784 trillion by the end of 2023, representing an annual growth rate of 8.3%.

Airtel Uganda’s Managing Director, Manoj Murali, is retiring this month after driving the company to impressive growth over the last four years.

Since taking charge in October 2020, Murali has overseen substantial revenue growth, with Airtel Uganda’s earnings rising from UGX1.296 trillion to UGX1.784 trillion by the end of 2023, representing an annual growth rate of 8.3%.

In the first half of 2024, revenue continued to rise, reaching UGX966.1 billion, despite a 6.5% drop in net profit to UGX153.2 billion. Having submitted his resignation in July, Murali has been serving his notice period and will officially step down this month.

Ashish Dutt, the new Chief Commercial Officer, will temporarily manage operations in November before Soumendra Sahu takes over as Managing Director on December 1.

With over 23 years of telecom experience at Tata Docomo, Reliance Communications, and most recently as CEO of Bharti Airtel’s Gujarat Circle, Sahu is expected to build on Murali’s successes and drive further growth.

Industry analysts believe Sahu’s extensive expertise positions him well to continue Airtel Uganda’s upward trajectory amidst rising competition in the telecom sector. “Airtel Uganda has thrived under Manoj’s leadership.

Soumendra’s appointment is a move for continued growth and innovation,” noted one analyst.

As the leadership transition unfolds, all eyes are on Sahu as he takes the reins, with the industry anticipating how Airtel Uganda will navigate the competitive landscape ahead.
