According to the Open Doors 2024 Report on International Educational Exchange, 1,303 Ugandan students are enrolled in US universities, up from 1,088 in the 2022-2023 academic year.
This surge highlights Uganda’s growing prominence as a leading sender of international students from Sub-Saharan Africa to the US.
The report, published by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education, also reveals a broader trend: international student enrollment in US colleges and universities hit an all-time high of 1,126,690 in the 2023-2024 academic year, marking a 7% increase.
Scott Weinhold, Senior Bureau Official for the Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, emphasized the importance of these exchanges.
“The experience of studying in the United States not only shapes the lives of individuals but also the future of our interconnected world. These ties create lasting relationships that drive innovation, trade, and diplomacy,” he said.
In Uganda, the US Mission has played a pivotal role in this upward trend through its EducationUSA program, which offers guidance to aspiring students. Based at the American Center Kampala, the program ensures that Ugandan students can access accurate information about studying in the US and provides support in navigating the application process.
EducationUSA, a global network spanning over 175 countries, promotes US higher education by connecting students with accredited institutions. The initiative also assists American universities in achieving their international recruitment goals, fostering a mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and culture.
The remarkable growth in Ugandan students heading to the US underscores the appeal of world-class education, opportunities for cultural exchange, and the potential to build bridges between nations. F
