Museveni orders probe into UGX60 billion bank of Uganda heist
A source confirmed that Museveni instructed the Auditor General to determine the scale of the loss before involving police to identify those criminally liable.
President Yoweri Museveni has directed an investigation into the theft of UGX 60 billion (about $16 million) from the Bank of Uganda, allegedly siphoned by hackers to accounts in Asia and Europe.
A source confirmed that Museveni instructed the Auditor General to determine the scale of the loss before involving police to identify those criminally liable.
The central bank has yet to comment on the cyber heist, but investigations are underway, with top officials set to be questioned. The theft adds to a string of scandals, including cases of old currency theft by staff, such as the 2020 conviction of Charles Kasede Ochieng, a former Head of Verification, for misappropriating currency notes meant for destruction.
President Museveni is also reportedly addressing alleged irregularities in the procurement of the Bank of Uganda National Payments Switch (BNPS) in 2023, which raised concerns about the procurement department’s integrity.
The central bank has been without a governor since the death of Emmanuel Mutebile in January 2022, leaving leadership gaps amid the institution’s ongoing challenges.
