Namisindwa municipal engineer hiding in Kenya arrested over corruption allegations

A municipal engineer from Namisindwa has been arrested after allegedly fleeing to Kenya while under investigation over suspected corruption involving public infrastructure funds.

The engineer was reportedly tracked down in Kenya before being apprehended and returned to Uganda, where authorities are continuing investigations into the allegations against him.

According to preliminary information, investigators are examining claims of financial mismanagement and possible irregularities in the execution of government-funded infrastructure projects.

The allegations are linked to concerns over the handling of public funds intended for development works.

The arrest is part of a wider government effort to strengthen accountability in local governments and address corruption-related cases involving officials responsible for public projects.

Namisindwa District has previously faced similar investigations involving technical officials.

In 2022, District Engineer Robert Mulekule Tululukha was arrested and charged with embezzlement and causing financial loss after a government inspection raised concerns over alleged ghost projects, damaged structures and poor road works despite significant public investment.

Anti-corruption agencies have in recent years intensified operations targeting officials accused of procurement irregularities, abuse of office and misuse of public resources.

The suspect is expected to appear before court after investigations are completed, where prosecutors will determine the charges to be filed.

The case has once again highlighted the need for stronger monitoring of local government projects to ensure public funds are used for their intended purposes and that communities receive value for money.
