Government reaffirms commitment to responsible mineral development in Yumbe
Minister Nyamutoro said the project presents a major opportunity for Yumbe District and the wider West Nile region, which she noted has significant gold deposits, including in Yumbe and Zombo

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible mineral development through formalisation, sustainable investment, and stronger regulatory compliance in Uganda’s mining sector.
The commitment was made during the launch of the Euro Gold Yumbe Small-Scale Mining Project, where the Minister of State for Mineral Development, Phiona Nyamutoro, said the initiative reflects government’s efforts to implement mineral development priorities under the National Development Plan IV (NDP IV).
Minister Nyamutoro said the project presents a major opportunity for Yumbe District and the wider West Nile region, which she noted has significant gold deposits, including in Yumbe and Zombo.
She welcomed Euro Gold’s investment, noting that the company is legally licensed to undertake mining activities, but urged it to ensure that its operations promote sustainable development and directly benefit surrounding communities.
The minister challenged Euro Gold and other mining companies to scale up their operations from small-scale mining to medium – and large-scale ventures while continuing to support artisanal and small-scale miners.
She reiterated government’s firm stance against illegal mining, warning that activities conducted without proper licences or beyond approved exploitation levels will continue to face enforcement measures.
Nyamutoro also highlighted challenges affecting small-scale miners, particularly access to insurance and healthcare services. She said the government is engaging relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Health, to address health concerns affecting miners.
She urged mining workers to prioritise their safety by using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while carrying out their duties.
The minister called on Euro Gold to create employment opportunities for local residents, offer internship opportunities, and support community development through corporate social responsibility programmes.
She said responsible exploitation of Uganda’s mineral resources has the potential to create jobs, attract investment, and contribute to the country’s economic transformation agenda.
