Oboth pledges parliamentary action to support private schools and reduce dropout rates

Speaker of Parliament  Oboth has pledged to use Parliament to push for policy measures aimed at reducing the high operational costs faced by private educational institutions and tackling rising school dropout rates among vulnerable children.

Oboth made the remarks during the 16th graduation ceremony of the Makerere Business Institute (MBI), where he highlighted the need for stronger interventions to ensure children remain in school despite social and economic challenges.

He emphasized that vulnerable children must be protected from risks such as early pregnancy, child labour, drug abuse, and mental health struggles, which often contribute to school interruptions and dropouts.

“When a child loses a parent, we must not allow that child to lose their future,” Oboth said, stressing the importance of safeguarding children’s education opportunities.

The Speaker noted that keeping children in school requires concerted efforts from government, private education providers, communities, and other stakeholders.

He pledged that Parliament would continue supporting policies that create a more enabling environment for education institutions while ensuring that disadvantaged learners have access to quality education.

The graduation ceremony brought together education stakeholders, graduates, and leaders who celebrated the achievements of students while reflecting on the need for continued investment in Uganda’s education sector.
