Speaker Anita Among calls for speedy trial of MPs Sewanyana & Ssegirinya who have now spent a year in prison without proper trial

Bobi Wine, who like many other members of the National Unity Platform (NUP, today marked the year-long continued holding of their colleagues.

Today, 7th September 2022, marks one year since MPs Ssegirinya Muhammad & Allan Ssewanyana were remanded to prison for what their party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine calls ‘bogus terrorism & murder charges.’

While the two MPs were given bail, the military rearrested them and have since failed to secure bail and freedom. Their continued stay in prison, the speaker of parliament Anita Among said, has deprived two constituencies of representation in parliament.

It is at this point that the speaker while opening today’s sitting that she asked government to speed up the trial of the two legislators and deliver justice. Today it is them; tomorrow it is someone else, Among decried the continued incarceration of the MPs.

“As the head of the institution, all members belong to the Speaker. My two members of parliament make one year in prison today. I request & plead with government for a speedy trial on these members so that they represent their constituencies,” Among pleaded.

Bobi Wine, who like many other members of the National Unity Platform (NUP, today marked the year-long continued holding of their colleagues. He said that last week, Justice Jane Alividza who attempted to fast-track their trial was unceremoniously transferred.

“The comrades now have to once again wait until another Judge is assigned their file. Thankfully, our legal team is doing all it can to stop this nightmare. It shall be well,” Bobi Wine, the NUP president said.

The secretary general of NUP, David Lewis Rubongoya, lamented how the MPs, like other NUP members who have been arrested by the regime, have been tortured while in detention.

“A few days back, some of the co-accused persons dropped a bombshell when they confessed to having been tortured and ordered to implicate the two MPs,” Rubongoya revealed.
