Auditor General’s office recovers Shs175bn & assets worth Shs4bn from corrupt Ugandans
According to Akello, the money was recovered after carrying out 6, 763 financial compliance audits which also resulted in the recovery of assets worth Shs4 billion.
As Ugandans prepare to commemorate International Anti-Corruption Day, the State Minister for Ethics and Integrity, Akello Rose Lilly, has told journalists in Kampala that Shs175 billion has so far been recovered by the office of the Auditor General from corrupt deals.
According to Akello, the money was recovered after carrying out 6, 763 financial compliance audits which also resulted in the recovery of assets worth Shs4 billion.
The commemoration of the day is aimed at promoting awareness about corruption, its dangers and how to combat it.
While addressing journalists on the government’s achievement in fighting corruption, Akello highlighted that the audits were made in special engineering, forensics and information technology.
“Currently, the IGG is investigating cases valued at about Shs500 billion some of which led to halting numerous suspicious procurements and activities that would have led to the loss of public funds,” Akello said.
The minister noted that several achievements were also made by the Criminal Investigations Directorate and State House Anti-Corruption Unit where Shs615 billion and Shs35.5 billion were recovered respectively.
She said the majority of the money from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit was embezzled during the Covid-19 period.
“The IGG has prosecuted 86 cases and secured 34 convictions while at the same time caused interdiction of 45 public officers including the chairperson of Uganda Land Commission, Beatrice Byenkya,” she said.
According to Betty Kamya, the Inspector General Of Government, there is still a need for a legal framework to implement the lifestyle audit which will help her office in fighting corruption.
The IGG explained that according to studies, Uganda could be losing up to Shs10 trillion in corruption per year through channels like under declaration of taxes, which is the main source of loss of revenue to the country.
International anti-corruption day will be commemorated on the 9th of this Friday in Ibanda district.
Ibanda was chosen for exercising good performance in local government service delivery last year 2021.
