Parents told to use holidays to register kids with NIRA

Learners have been encouraged to utilize the holiday period and register with the National Identification and Registration Authority.

This is hoped to help in the operationalization of the recently launched revised lower secondary school curriculum, which entails collection of the continuous assessment scores as part of the final UNEB results.
According to UNEB, schools and learners in particular, who fail to register to get National Identification Numbers, will translate into no grading despite having attended school for the specified period.

Rosemary Kisembo the executive director NIRA, says this is to facilitate UNEB to uniquely identify learners and collection of their continuous assessment scores; one of the major components of the revised lower secondary school curriculum.

“To all students, part of your holiday plot, go to our offices because we are prioritizing students in all our offices in the country, to allow you register,” she noted.

Accordingly, Rosemary Kisembo urges learners whose particulars were collected in the previous exercises, to verify their statuses.

She said in regards to mass enrollment of other citizens, this will be done in June this year, and this will be an extra service to Ugandans to access their needs.

Relatedly, Mr. Peter Wakabi the Director ICT and Reprographics at UNEB, tasked schools to harmonize their learners’ information on the education Information management system portal, as soon as they can to ease the process of updating learners’ promotional scores.

“However, please note that learners previously registered by NIRA are required to first verify their registration status to determine whether to proceed with providing fresh information for NIRA Registration. NIRA Registration is confirmed by a NIN,” he noted.

Wakabi explained that visiting the nearest NIRA office to confirm status of the earlier registration Education Management Information System (EMIS), Schools registering for Continuous Assessment should have registered their learners on the MOES Education Information Management System.

Continuous assessment is a strategy implemented by teachers to ascertain knowledge, understanding, skills, and mechanism whereby final grading of the learners takes account of all their performance during a given period.
