Police warn Ssewanyana Ssegirinya against holding unlawful protests

According to Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga, they have gathered credible intelligence that the MPs are planning to hold an unlawful assembly.

Police have warned Makindye West and Kawempe North legislators, Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya, against holding unlawful protests in the capital Kampala, over the poor state of Makindye Salaama road.

According to Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga, they have gathered credible intelligence that the MPs are planning to hold an unlawful assembly.

According to Enanga, the alleged procession which he described as illegal will pass through the city centre up to Parliament.

Enanga warned the MPs that whereas it is within their right to protest, they ought to inform the police about the same as enshrined in the Public Order Management Act 2013.

“It is only foolhardy for the two opposition legislators to protest over roads whose construction works are soon commencing by Kampala Capital City Authority,” Enanga said.

“This road has been planned for construction by KCCA. Why don’t you engage officials before you go into holding unlawful assemblies? Engage them before going into these acts of lawlessness and impunity,” he stated.

Police said their experience with these processions is that they massively disrupt the rights of other members of the public.

Territorial commanders have been tasked to disperse all forms of disorderliness, lawlessness and impunity as well as these illegal assemblies the two MPs would like to engage themselves in

It should be noted that Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana temporarily regained their freedom on 13th February this year, after being released on bail.

The two are being accused of being behind the wave of machete killings of at least 26 people in greater Masaka in mid-2021.
