Alien’s dress code: Bold or protected? Gov’t seems unbothered

While many Ugandans have faced arrest and even take to the court martial for wearing military garments, Alien Skin has somehow managed to escape this fate. His secret? A peculiar form of camouflage, both literal and figurative.

In a country where wearing military attire can swiftly land you in the court martial, Ugandan musician Alien Skin has seemingly defied the odds.

Known for his edgy lyrics and rebellious image, the rising star has recently found a unique way to stay on the right side of the law by donning the very uniforms that have gotten others arrested.

Alien’s dress code, whose real name is Patrick Mulwana, has become a household name not just for his music but for his audacious style.

While many Ugandans have faced arrest and even take to the court martial for wearing military garments, Alien Skin has somehow managed to escape this fate. His secret? A peculiar form of camouflage, both literal and figurative.

The Camouflage Controversy

Uganda’s security forces have historically taken a hardline stance against civilians wearing military attire, seeing it as a threat to national security.

Countless Ugandans have been arrested, prosecuted, and penalized under the law. But Alien Skin, with his penchant for UPDF (Uganda People’s Defense Force) garments, has not only avoided arrest but has also gained a curious form of acceptance.

A case in point is the recent arrest of two civilians on 15th July 2024, who were found with the UPDF attire.

According to Maj. Charles Kabona, the Spokesperson for the First Division of UPDF, one of the men identified as John Adams Ssentongo was found in illegal possession of military Attire and army license plates.

In the same month a self-styled ‘pastor’ allegedly attached to Cross of Miracle Church Kanyanya in Kampala City, was convicted by the General Court Martial for illegally wearing defense stores.

To mention but a few, many have been found to be on the side of the law. The UPDF Act under section 164 prohibits the unauthorized sale or wearing of military uniforms, with a penalty of seven years imprisonment on conviction by a court.

However, with Alien’s dress code, one may think he falls under those who are exempted such as persons with authority from the force, among others.

From his concerts to public appearances, Alien Skin’s military-inspired outfits have become part of his brand. Yet, unlike others who have faced the wrath of the law, he continues to walk free leaving many Ugandans puzzled and some even envious.

A Star in the Political Spotlight

The plot thickened when Alien Skin made a high-profile appearance in Bukedea 2 days ago, sharing the stage with the Speaker of parliament Anita Annet Among during the opening of the FEASA games.

As the President, the Chief Guest, and other dignitaries looked on, Alien’s dress code and presence in military gear raised eyebrows and sparked conversations across the nation.

How does a musician known for his defiance and street-style fashion find himself rubbing shoulders with Uganda’s political elite—especially in attire that has landed others in serious trouble?

Some speculate that Alien Skin’s popularity and influence may have earned him a unique status, allowing him to skirt the very laws that have ensnared others.

Others believe his calculated use of military attire is a savvy move to align himself with power, ensuring protection from potential legal repercussions.

“Alien Skin has tapped into a powerful symbol, the military uniform, knowing it carries both risk and reward,” said a media analyst who preferred anonymity.

“By wearing it, he’s playing a dangerous game, but it’s one that seems to be paying off. He’s positioning himself not just as an entertainer but as a figure of defiance who is, ironically, above the law.”

The Bigger Picture

Alien Skin’s story has sparked a broader debate about the enforcement of laws in Uganda. While many applaud his boldness, others question why he has been allowed to flaunt rules that have led to harsh consequences for others.

“If the law applies to some and not to others, what message does that send to the public?” asks legal expert Isaac Katumba. “It’s not just about the uniform; it’s about fairness and the perception of justice in our society.”

As Alien Skin continues to rise in fame, so too does the controversy surround his choices.

Whether he’s found a loophole in the law or simply enjoys a rare form of immunity, one thing is clear: Alien Skin is more than just a musician—he’s a cultural force, challenging norms and sparking conversations about power, privilege, and the curious case of Uganda’s unspoken rules.
