The demographic data has important implications for policymakers, development partners, and stakeholders in various sectors.
The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has released demographic data from the 2024 national census indicating a gender gap with females making up 51% of the population (23,331,814) and males 49% (22,568,186).
Additionally, the data has revealed a surge in the country’s youth population with over 70% of Uganda’s population below the age of 30, with 22.7% aged between 18-30 years.
The census data shows that the youth population has increased significantly since 2014, with a growth rate of 3.5% per annum. This trend is expected to continue, with implications for education, employment, and healthcare.
“The data highlights the need for urgent investment in youth development programs, education, and job creation,” said Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, Executive Director and Census Commissioner of UBOS.
“We must prioritize the needs of our young people to ensure a prosperous future for Uganda,” he said.
UBOS further revealed that rural areas have a higher population density than urban areas, with 70% of the population (31,929,414) residing in rural areas and 30% (13,970,586) in urban areas.
The demographic data has important implications for policymakers, development partners, and stakeholders in various sectors. By understanding the demographic trends, stakeholders can better plan for the needs of the population and ensure sustainable development.
“The census data provides a comprehensive picture of Uganda’s demographic landscape,” Dr. Mukiza emphasized. “We are committed to providing accurate and reliable data to support Uganda’s development.”
