Community in shock after P4 pupil, 9, dies at unlicensed boarding school in Kalungu

Authorities have pledged to strengthen oversight of private boarding schools to ensure the safety of learners across the district.

A nine-year-old Primary Four pupil at an unlicensed boarding school in Lukaya Town Council, Kalungu District, has died, leaving parents, teachers, and classmates in mourning.

The child, Vanessa Nakayemba, reportedly became ill while in her dormitory. School officials attempted to provide care, but the pupil succumbed to the illness. The family has called for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Police have confirmed the dormitory was overcrowded and unhygienic, and a school matron has been detained to assist with inquiries. The incident has prompted local authorities to caution parents about the risks of enrolling children in unregistered institutions.
