Ebola forces Uganda Prisons to suspend visitations

Baine revealed that an Ebola Treatment Unit (ETU) and disinfection point for staff deployed at court will be established at Kampala Remand Prison.

The Spokesperson of Uganda Prisons, Frank Baine, has issued a statement announcing strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) following the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in Mubende district and its spread to other neighbouring districts including the capital Kampala.

Among the SOPs that have been issued by the Commissioner General of Prisons, Johnson Byabashaija, is the banning of visitations to all Prison Units and Courts until further notice.

Prisons officers will wear facemasks at all times while they are on duty. Also banned is referring sick prisoners to health facilities outside the Prison Health System.

“Community work in Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono districts is suspended until further notice. Staff on court duty in Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono will be provided with basic PPE kits,” Baine said.

He added: “Kampala remand prison will be collapsed for admission of new prisoners from Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso courts,”
