Energy ministry commissions 132KV Namanve-Luzira transmission lines

The minister of Energy and Mineral Development Dr Ruth Nankabirwa has today commissioned the 132KV Namanve-Luzira transmission lines.

Nankabirwa said that the Namanve-Luzira transmission line is vital to the power network in the efforts to support industrialization and social – economic development of the country.

“My ministry is committed to the implementation of the sustainable energy development program whose objective is to meet Uganda’s energy needs by providing adequate, affordable and clean reliable energy for sustainable socio-economic growth and development,” she said.

The event was held at the Namanve sub-station in Namanve industrial area in Mukono district in presence of both her junior ministers Peter Lokeris (State minerals) and Opolot Okaasai (State energy).

Nankabirwa confirmed that the current installed electricity generation capacity in Uganda is 1378.1MW which is expected to increase to over 2000MW once the 600MW Karuma hydropower plant is completed.

She further stressed that in order to meet the financial requirements of the free connection policy, the government has partnered with the World Bank to implement the $638M electricity access scale Up project with a target to achieve up to 1,073,500 connections for households.

“Government has also introduced a hybrid connection scheme to address the funding gap using the free electricity connections policy whereby domestic consumers requiring a no-pole costing Ush720,883 as approved by the Electricity Regulatory Authority are now required to pay only Ush200,000” she added.

The government through the ministry of energy has mobilized finances to construct many transmission projects to expand and reinforce the transmission network to increase power availability and reliability in the country.
