EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Prossy Mwanjuzi’s meteoric rise from grassroots mobilisation to RDC and more
It is not that I am going to contest for electoral positions but if the time comes, I will.
In this exclusive interview, Prossy Mwanjuzi, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) for Mityana district shares her life’s journey, including rising from being a strong grassroots supporter of National Resistance Movement (NRM) and President Yoweri Museveni regime to her appointment as Deputy RDC.
Beyond political alliances, she sheds light on her motivations, experiences, and the transformative impact she aims to bring to the areas she serves.
Who is Prossy Mwanjuzi?
Prossy Mwanjuzi is a mother, and a medic by profession. I am one of the last children of Eng. Amosi Mwanjuzi and late Rose Mwanjuzi of Bulembo Kidera, Buyende District. I am also the Deputy Resident District Commissioner; Mityana District.
Other than being a strong supporter of the regime, what can you say made the President Museveni appoint you as Deputy RDC?
Well, I think the President appointed me as Deputy RDC because of the efforts I put in the last general elections. First of all I was the coordinator of the Office of the National Chairman (ONC) in Buyende district. I resigned from my job and spent three good years mobilizing for the President and NRM.
Actually when I was appointed, everyone was expecting it because I really concentrated in Buyende without being paid but would only survive on facilitations. I would also get money from my medical center and it is what I would use to print t-shirts, banners, adverts. I would really like to thank my people from Buyende for voting President Museveni where he won by 88.5%. I think that is where he realized I am an active lady and definitely appointed me as Deputy RDC.
As a Deputy RDC, what are your roles?
One of my roles is to protect the image of the presidency through fully representing wherever I am deployed. First of all, people vote for Members of Parliament who sometimes are not on ground which is essential for proper service delivery. But through our monthly reports to our bosses, we always highlight the problems in our districts. We also monitor government projects and ensure that accountability is made. Above all, whether as RDC or Deputy RDC, you are head of security in that area therefore I have to ensure that the area where I am deployed is safe security wise.
Honestly, I have done all that in Mityana, just because there are some mafias who always want me to join them in their dirty work and when you refuse, they decide to fight you. I want to thank the appointing authority for bringing me to Mityana, it is really a hot plate, but I have learnt a lot.
From Mbale to Mityana, what is your score card like?
When I was in Mbale, I fought for the local people; a case in point is the immigration saga. Immigration officers were cheating people as they had to pay them money in order to get a passport. It would really be hard for one to acquire a passport because the cost was exaggerated by the brokers and immigration officers; I ensured that all those were arrested.
My work was also centered on women and children’s rights. Security wise, the Northern division had a high crime rate, we created a committee to fight the crime in the division and I know I scored. I want to thank God that I did not achieve it alone, we did it as team through patrols, arrests.
Then also in Nakaloke health center, medical workers were selling medicine on top of being absent for most of the time. All these were arrested and everything went back to normal.
I am really proud of my people in Mbale, my security committee because honestly they were really there for me and loved me. Up to now they are still crying for me but as you know we cannot move backward.
Mityana is an emerging opposition hotspot; describe how it feels working in Mityana?
It is true Mityana is an opposition hotspot but the masses got tired of their empty promises. They later realized that they were being used. I want to thank my people in Mityana for realizing the truth; they prefer service delivery as opposed to the empty promises of “tugya kwambala engule”.
They used to believe in Mityana MP Zaake and his father but after sometime they realized they were being used. As government, we provide services to the public and later look for votes in good faith since we have proof of work. I believe we shall score highly in the next elections as the NRM.
How has being Ag RDC built you as an individual?
When I was appointed to this position, I realized that I am a responsible citizen. Actually some people opposed my appointment claiming I was still young and I would not manage the position but I had to prove them wrong. I am using this position to create a good network of friends who will benefit me in the future.
I am sure if I am confirmed as RDC, I will be able to execute my duties to the best of my ability. Mafias have tried fighting me because of the way I do my work but I have stood still like an iron lady and I have won those battles. It is quite sad that even respected political leaders promote mafiarism but I am glad I have overcome all that.
Does this mean you intend to contest in the near future?
It is not that I am going to contest for electoral positions but if the time comes, I will. But for now I want to help the local people in my area. I don’t believe I will stop at RDC position, with time God willingly the President may appoint me to a ministerial position because of my hard work.
Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
I see myself higher than where I am right now. I see myself in the image of Rt Hon Rebecca Kadaga. She inspires me and I hope I will be braver like her.
Any last words…
I would like to appeal to my fellow youth that before you say government has not done anything, what you have done for the government. You need to work hard to achieve what you want.
