Gen Muhoozi’s remarks on Lt Gen Elwelu ignite debate on military leadership
In a now-deleted post, Gen Muhoozi referred to Lt Gen Elwelu as a “buffoon” and cast doubt on his suitability for military service.
Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, stirred controversy on Thursday after making inflammatory remarks about former deputy CDF Lt Gen Peter Elwelu.
The comments, shared on Gen Muhoozi’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, have fueled public debate and raised questions about potential discord within the top echelons of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
In a now-deleted post, Gen Muhoozi referred to Lt Gen Elwelu as a “buffoon” and cast doubt on his suitability for military service.
“Elwelu is a buffoon! He is completely unworthy of our great Army! He better run as fast as his small legs can carry him,” the post read.
The attack followed an earlier cryptic tweet in which Gen Muhoozi hinted at taking action against an individual he described as a “fool.” Although unnamed initially, the target of the remarks became apparent when Lt Gen Elwelu was explicitly mentioned in the subsequent post.
“There is one FOOL that I will arrest soon. He is hiding behind my father, but I will capture him. He comes from Teso,” Gen Muhoozi wrote in another post, which has also been deleted.
The public nature of the remarks has drawn significant attention, with many questioning the implications of such internal disputes being aired publicly.
The situation has sparked discussions on the potential impact of such incidents on military cohesion and leadership stability within the UPDF.
Neither Lt Gen Elwelu nor the UPDF has officially responded to Gen Muhoozi’s remarks, leaving the public to speculate on the underlying issues and their broader implications for Uganda’s defense forces.
