Gov’t set to recruit more 1000 medical workers

The public health service commission hopes to also increase on the number of health workers, especially in heath centers three and four, as this will help all Ugandans to access the medical services at all levels.

The government, through the Ministry of Health, is set to recruit close to 1,000 medical workers of various specialties across the country.

Addressing the media in Kampala, the Chairperson of the Health Service Commission, Dr. Pius Okong, stated that, “this recruitment exercise is focused on promotional opportunities for medical personnel who have been in the system and seek advancement, as they now qualify.”

According to Okong, it also includes those who applied following advertisements in newspapers, and individuals on the validation list from three hospitals recently upgraded to regional referral status.

“Other medical personnel being considered are those who served during the COVID-19 period and are professional but not yet on the public service payroll,” he said.

He explained that out of this recruitment effort, the commission plans to recruit over 70 medical specialists from various categories.

“Additionally, more than 70 medical officers, all first-degree holders, will be joining the public service payroll for the first time, with the majority having served during the COVID-19 pandemic,” he added.

The exercise according to the minister will also involve the recruitment of nurses, who hold diplomas, with over 130 midwife nurses expected to be recruited by the end of this financial year.

Dr. Okong further highlighted that among the category of diploma-holding nurses, 200 will be recruited for various hospitals, and their recruitment is based on assessment of suitability, as they have been in service and have acquired additional training.

“The health service commission hopes to extend technical support to local governments of Kyiryandogo, Kasese, and Hoima districts among others to achieve the target for the financial year 2023/2024.”
