How Tick Bedside Nursing home is redefining elderly care standards in Uganda
Margaret Busingye the Executive Director of Tick Bedside Nursing Care, highlighted that as individuals age, illnesses tend to become chronic, such as diabetes, and some are attributed to lifestyle factors.
Since global demographics are changing exceedingly fast, the challenges and prospects raised by ageing populations have acquired prominence. No other place is more conspicuous than in the facilities of elderly nursing homes, which are institutions that intend to deliver full care not only for the aged people and those needing help in their activities of daily living but also for those requiring medical help.
With an aging world, the complexities arising therefore have initiated the growth in demand for services and products directed towards maintaining a higher quality of life among older adults.
Margaret Busingye the Executive Director of Tick Bedside Nursing Care, highlighted that as individuals age, illnesses tend to become chronic, such as diabetes, and some are attributed to lifestyle factors.
Busingye who was appearing on “Morning At NTV” program stated that, “the elderly are particularly susceptible to conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s. While our primary focus is on elderly care, we also extend our services to diverse groups, including new mothers,”
Amidst this evolving landscape, Busingye was narrates how she came up with the idea of an elderly nursing home, after tragically loosing her love done who suffered a stroke in their old age.
“In 2011, my mother received a diagnosis of a heart problem, leaving her in a vulnerable state. Eventually, she suffered a stroke, prompting me to seek a solution. I decided to hire a nurse to care for her while I attended to work commitments,” she added.
She further explained that in this case, the professional care of a trained nurse is genuinely reassuring and brings a sense of peace of mind.
However, one may wonder how do these nursing homes go about their work. Busingye stresses that working individuals who serve as breadwinners have embraced the concept of nursing care. “When they witness the positive impact on someone’s well-being through our services, they often recommend our care to others,” she added.
“The nurse on duty is assigned full-time to provide continuous care for the patient until they regain independence or recover from their illness,”
From technological advancements and person-cantered care approaches to community engagement and holistic well-being, the narrative surrounding elderly nursing homes is shifting towards a more compassionate and dignified model.
