Having battled health challenges privately for years, the Kabaka’s presence symbolized resilience and hope for his people, affirming his unwavering support for the Kingdom amid both triumph and challenges.
Namboole Stadium was alive with excitement as fans gathered for the much-anticipated Masaza Cup Final between Buddu and Kyaggwe.
Yet, the real highlight was the appearance of Buganda’s revered King, Ssabasajja Edward Frederick Kimera Muwenda Mutebi II, whose attendance sent waves of joy and pride through the crowd.

Adding to the day’s weight was the ongoing debate surrounding the proposed coffee bill, a law that could reshape Uganda’s coffee industry, central to Buganda’s heritage and economy. Amid widespread concerns, especially for small-scale farmers, the King’s attendance was a quiet but powerful message of solidarity.
The thrilling final saw Buddu secure their third Masaza Cup title with a 1-0 win over Kyaggwe. Both teams played with exceptional skill, but Buddu’s strategic edge clinched the victory.
Coach Simon Ddungu praised his team’s determination, saying, “We knew Kyaggwe would be tough, but our players showed true resilience.” Kyaggwe fought fiercely, narrowly missing their first title.
Airtel Uganda’s Director of Sales and Distribution, Ali Balunywa, commended both teams for their talent and spirit, recognizing the tournament’s role in elevating local players. “We congratulate Buddu on their win and thank the Kabaka for his support,” he said.
Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, Katikiro of Buganda, highlighted the tournament’s significance, noting, “This event fosters unity and showcases our community’s strength. We’re grateful for the Kabaka’s presence, which reinforces the tournament’s cultural importance.”
With Buddu’s victory and the Kabaka’s inspiring return, the 20th Airtel Masaza Cup concluded on a high note, leaving fans eagerly awaiting next year’s edition.
