Kampala youth throng presidential skilling initiative
Over 5,000 students in five divisions of Kampala were registered to start vocational skills training courses under the presidential skilling initiative.
Youths yesterday turned up in large numbers to register for the presidential initiative on skilling boys and girl child.
Charmar News learnt that some prospective learners were left out due to the high turn-up.
Over 5,000 students in five divisions of Kampala were registered to start vocational skills training courses under the presidential skilling initiative.
Dr Faith Mirembe Katana, the head of the program in State House, said the youths have embraced this program and thanked the President for the initiative.
“Among the places where these youths are coming from include Mutundwe, Wandegeya, Mulago, Subway, Luzira and Nakawa. We have found out that many prospective learners had turned up in large numbers,” she noted.
Katana asked the President to help them increase the number of learners and centres to accommodate as many youths as possible.
The Nakawa Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Sheikh Cassim Kamugisha, commended the initiative and thanked the youth for the huge turnup.
Namale Bisirikirwa, the Mutundwe Centre administrator and the Luzira Prison Centre administrator, Joyce Athieno, also hailed the initiative.
The presidential initiative on the skilling the girl/boy child project ensures that the needy acquire skilling courses like hairdressing, embroidery, tailoring, knitting, weaving, shoe making, bakery and confectionery.
The goal is to ensure that needy children benefit from the presidential initiative from various centres so that they can be self-employed.
At at the end of the 6months course, students do an assessment exam given by the Directorate of industrial training (DIT) and are given certificates.
