MoWT rolls out phase three of digital registration plates
The ministry has emphasized that after this grace period, motor vehicle owners and dealers will have to reapply for duplicate plates using the new regime of registration plates in line with the Traffic and Road Safety (Registration Plates) Regulations 2022, as amended.
The Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) has announced the rollout of phase three of the Digital Registration Plates initiative, set to commence on Monday, January 6, 2025.
The new system will mark the end of services by the current providers, GM Tumpeco and ABC Ltd, who will continue processing orders for motor vehicle registration plates received until the end of January 5, 2025.
From January 6, 2025, all registration plates will be issued by the new service provider, M/S Joint Stock Company Global Security. Vehicle owners and dealers have been granted a 30-day grace period beginning January 5, 2025, to collect their plates from the outgoing providers for orders placed before January 6.
The ministry has emphasized that after this grace period, motor vehicle owners and dealers will have to reapply for duplicate plates using the new regime of registration plates in line with the Traffic and Road Safety (Registration Plates) Regulations 2022, as amended.
First-time registration under the new system will cost UGX 714,300, while migrating from old to new plates will cost UGX 150,000 for vehicles and UGX 50,000 for motorcycles. Motor vehicle owners have a two-year grace period to complete the migration.
The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has created an online portal to simplify the application process. Vehicle owners can log in with their Tax Identification Number (TIN) and access the digital plate registration section for a step-by-step guide.
The MoWT has urged motor vehicle owners and dealers to take advantage of the grace period to collect their plates and avoid the inconvenience of reapplying.
This transition is part of Uganda’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety, improve vehicle tracking, and streamline law enforcement operations. Vehicle owners are encouraged to stay informed by following the ministry’s updates and utilizing the available online resources.
