Cabinet intends to establish a new Food, Animal and Plant Health Authority under the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries which will be separate from the National Drug Authority (NDA) under the Ministry of Health.
According to Dr Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, the new Authority will regulate food, veterinary medicines and products related to animal health.
While addressing journalists at Uganda Media Centre on Tuesday, Baryomunsi said the new Food, Animal and Plant Health Authority is part of the proposed changes (amendments) to the National Drug Authority Policy and Authority’s Act.
He said this new authority will focus on regulating veterinary medicines, vaccines, devices, agrochemicals, and other therapeutic products for animal and plant health.
Baryomunsi said UNBS will regulate all other products except those regulated by NDA. It will also remain a custodian of standards in accordance with the law.
