NO CLAIM: You Resigned After Electing New NUP Leadership, Electoral Commission Stuns Kibalama
On Tuesday, the country woke up to the news that a NUP splinter group led by Kibalama had opened up new offices for the party.
The disputed ownership and leadership of Uganda’s leading political party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), has today been clarified by the Electoral Commission (EC) when it refused to accept the returns filed by Moses Nkonge Kibalama because he is no longer in charge of the party.
In a letter dated 21st June 2022 addressed to Kibalama and Mr. Ssimbwa Paul Kagombe as members of the party the EC acknowledged receipt of their returns lodged with the Commission on 27th May 2022 but the EC said they were the wrong people to submit.
“You will recall that in the final submissions you made to the Electoral Commission on 21st July, 2020, you and Mr. Ssimbwa Paul Kagombe resigned as Party Leaders and both of you signed as out-going leaders,” the EC told Kibalama.
“Prior to your resignation, you did chair a meeting that conducted elections of office bearers, to whom you handed over respective offices, and the subsequent Party meeting held elections of its National Executive Committee.” the EC further assured Kibalama.
The EC also made it known to Kibalama and Kagombe that the party, as indicated in the 2020 returns, has a new leadership to which they don’t belong anymore. They are only members of NUP.
The new leadership of NUP now has Kyagulanyi Robert Ssentamu as the party president. Kyagulanyi is deputized by Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru for northern region, Jolly Mugisha for western region, Nambeshe John Baptiste for eastern region, Mathias Mpuuga for central region and David Lewis Rubongoya as secretary general.
On Tuesday, the country woke up to the news that a NUP splinter group led by Kibalama had opened up new offices for the party in Lubaga division. This was described by the Bobi Wine group as masquerading and warned the perpetrators that they would face the wrath of the law.
Reacting to the decision and communication from the EC, Gideon Tugume, the secretary of the splitter Kibalama group said they will take the matter to public court because NUP is a party of the people.
