NUP opens flag bearer selection for Kawempe North by-election
Applicants are required to include a written application, a copy of their NUP membership card, National ID, curriculum vitae, and certified copies of academic qualifications.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) has initiated the process of selecting its flag bearer for the Kawempe North by-election.
In a circular dated January 28, 2025, Mercy Walukamba, the NUP Electoral Commission Chairperson, announced that the submission of expressions of interest will begin on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at 9 a.m. Applications must be submitted physically at the party headquarters in Makerere-Kavule.
Applicants are required to include a written application, a copy of their NUP membership card, National ID, curriculum vitae, and certified copies of academic qualifications.
The Kawempe North parliamentary seat fell vacant on January 9, 2025, following the death of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya due to a prolonged illness. Several individuals have already expressed interest in contesting for the seat under the NUP ticket, including city lawyer Nalukoola Luyimbaazi, the late Ssegirinya’s aide Luwemba Lusswa Muhammad, and Magara Umar.
The Electoral Commission (EC) released a detailed roadmap for the Kawempe North by-election and the Kazo Angola Division Councillor elections. The process began on January 27, 2025, with a press briefing and stakeholder meetings.
The update of the National Voters’ Register started on January 27, 2025, and will close on January 31, 2025. Registration and transfer of voters will run from January 31 to February 1, 2025, followed by the recruitment of officials for the display of the Voters’ Register and returning officers from February 3 to February 10, 2025.
Nomination of candidates is scheduled for February 25 and 26, 2025, at the office of the Returning Officer. Campaigns will begin on February 28 and end on March 11, 2025.
Polling day officials will be recruited on February 17 and 18, with the names of successful applicants displayed at the Returning Officer’s office from February 19 to 24, 2025.
The by-elections for Kawempe North Member of Parliament and the Kazo Angola City Division Councillor will take place on March 13, 2025.
Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, the former NUP MP for Kawempe North, passed away before completing his first term in office. He succumbed to a long-term illness on January 9, 2025, at Rubaga Hospital.
