Police arrests 13 for vandalizing electricity equipment
During the operation, police noted that they also managed to recover over 40 tones of angle lines used to construct high-voltage power lines.
Police have carried out an intelligence-led operation in three different areas of Kampala in which they arrested 13 suspects highly linked to the rampant cases of vandalism of electricity infrastructure in various parts of the country.
During the operation, police noted that they also managed to recover over 40 tones of angle lines used to construct high-voltage power lines.
According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the three locations are Social Center Scrap Yard and Nakitende Scrap Yard at Budonian village, both in Mengo parish, Kampala central division, as well as Kisenyi Scrap Dealers opposite Ham Building central zone Kisenyi I Parish.
“The operation targeted areas where suspected electrical materials are stored and sold in areas of Kisenyi, and this comes after reports of constant vandalism of Umeme electrical materials in different parts of the country are bought and sold amongst them in areas of Kisenyi and surrounding areas,” he said.
Onyango added that other items that were recovered included rails of the railway line, angle bars for the electricity power lines and solar poles suspected to be of KCCA.
Among the key suspects included Ssebagala Robert, Maganda Arafat, Kyomugisha Rachael, Naluyima Aisha and Nabakooza Allen.
