Shock as 9 people die during fireworks display at Freedom City
All territorial commanders were tasked to watch out for organizers who set off fireworks outside the permitted times which can be dangerous to the public.
Territorial Police at Katwe are investigating an incident of rash and neglect that occurred at a New Year’s Eve event, at the Freedom City Mall in Namasuba – Makindye Division.
According to Police, the death of the nine people including other juveniles happened when the event’s MC encouraged attendees to go outside and watch the fireworks display.
“After the display ended, a stampede ensued, resulting in the instant death of five people and injuries to several others.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene and transported the injured individuals to the hospitalwhere nine were confirmed dead,” said Luke Oweyisigire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson.
Oweyisigire hasn’t revealed the names of the deceased, however, he confirmed that their bodies have been transferred to City Mortuary Mulago.
It should be noted that at the beginning of this week, Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga issued out guidelines under which fireworks was to be displayed.
