The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, is concerned about attempts by different schools to increase school fees.
According to the speaker, this is in breach of the various previous circulars issued by the ministry of education and sports barring schools from arbitrary school fees increment, notably the circulars of November 2017 and 2022.
“Any such school fees increment will be in total disregard of the prevailing socio-economic realities. As such, I call upon government to prudently exercise its regulatory role in ensuring that no such arbitrary school fees increments are affected,” she noted.
Charmar News has learnt that a number of schools both at primary and secondary school levels have hiked their fees ahead of the start of the first term in a fortnight.
The increment runs counter to the education ministry’s directive barring schools from making any adjustments as the cost-of-living crisis rages on.
In 2021, the education ministry issued a circular barring private school from hiking fees.
The communication that was embedded under the ‘Express Permission’ sought to bar private institutions from increasing school fees or any other charges without permission from the education ministry.
