Stay alert, Police urge public on terror threat
This alert comes in the wake of the November 2021 attacks in Kampala, where coordinated bombings at the Central Police Station and Parliamentary Avenue resulted in the loss of 10 lives and multiple injuries.
In response to a recent terror alert issued by the US Embassy, Ugandan police are urging the public to remain calm but vigilant, as they step up security measures to counter a potential terrorist attack.
Over the weekend, the US Embassy cautioned its citizens to steer clear of crowded places after receiving intelligence about a possible terrorist plot.
Police spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke, confirmed the credibility of the alert, emphasizing that Uganda remains a primary target for terrorists due to its active role in combating terrorism.
“Terrorism remains a real and present danger for us, and while we’re prepared to confront these threats, we must all stay vigilant,” Rusoke stated.
“We aren’t hiding from the threat but are actively addressing it.”
Rusoke highlighted the importance of public cooperation as the first line of defense.
“The public’s role is crucial in preventing such attacks. We urge everyone to take security measures seriously. If you manage a mall or any public venue, ensure strict security checks. Stay vigilant and report anything suspicious to the authorities,” he advised.
This alert comes in the wake of the November 2021 attacks in Kampala, where coordinated bombings at the Central Police Station and Parliamentary Avenue resulted in the loss of 10 lives and multiple injuries.
The attacks were attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a terrorist group operating from Eastern DRC.
In response to the 2021 attacks, Ugandan security forces intensified their efforts, dismantling several ADF cells within the country.
A joint military operation with the DRC army, named “Shuja,” was also launched, targeting ADF camps in Eastern Congo.
This operation has led to the capture and killing of numerous ADF members, as well as the rescue of many hostages.
The police are asking the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activity immediately, ensuring that everyone plays a part in keeping the country safe.
