Girl strangled to death by 30 year old step mother

Sylvia Uwimana, 30years, a resident of Kyakato Cell in Kakindo Town Council, is in custody at the Kakumiro Central Police Station, for allegedly strangling her stepdaughter to death.

The deceased Stepdaughter, Rosemary Mbabazi, 10years, was a resident of the same area where the incident occurred on Sunday evening.

According to police, Uwimana went to fetch water with Mbabazi at Kabayigalira Swamp, a few kilometers from their home. On their way back, Uwimana allegedly attacked and strangled her stepdaughter to death, later dumping her lifeless body in the nearby swamp.

“The body was discovered by children playing near the swamp, who then reported the incident to area residents. Residents rushed to the scene and found the child with bruises around her neck.” Said Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson.

Johnson Musinguzi, the deceased’s father, expressed shock upon learning that his wife had murdered her stepdaughter to death.

He stated that, “prior to the incident, my wife and stepdaughter had been living peacefully, and I was bewildered by her brutal decision.”

Hakiza further noted that, “during police interrogation, Uwimana admitted to strangling her stepdaughter.”

Police added that once the police investigations are complete, Uwimana will be arraigned in court and charged with murdering stepdaughter to death.

“The police transported the deceased’s body to Kakumiro Health Center IV for a postmortem before handing it over to the relatives for burial arrangements.” He added.

In Uganda, according to the 2022 Annual Crimes Report, there was a slight increase in the cases of domestic violence registered, some where Stepdaughter are being murdered.

There were 17,698 reported cases compared to 17,533 in 2021.

Despite the global efforts to protect children from abuse and violence by 2030 under SDG 16.2, corporal punishment remains alarmingly prevalent, disproportionately affecting millions of children, including those in Uganda.

similarly in March this year, Police in Bushenyi District arrested a 30-year-old woman on allegations of murdering her three-year-old child and buried her in a pit. The incident happened in Muzira 1 Village, Kabare Parish, Kakanju Sub County in Bushenyi District.

According to Police, the suspect, who happened to be the biological mother of the deceased allegedly strangled her at about 8pm on a Tuesday and dug a pit in the banana plantation close to their family house, where she buried the body.
