Traffic Advisory: Motorists urged to plan ahead as Uganda hosts AU summit

To ensure the smooth flow of traffic and provide secure access for summit participants, the Uganda Police has announced several road closures and diversions along key routes leading to the venue.

Motorists and travelers have been advised to carefully plan their journeys as Uganda prepares to host the African Union Extra-Ordinary Summit from January 9th to 11th, 2025, at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

The high-profile event is expected to attract over 2,000 participants, including dignitaries from across the continent.

To ensure the smooth flow of traffic and provide secure access for summit participants, the Uganda Police has announced several road closures and diversions along key routes leading to the venue.

The Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, the main route for summit convoys, will be restricted to official vehicles only. Alternative routes and diversions will be in place to manage congestion and ensure uninterrupted movement:

  • Mpala: Motorists will be redirected to Entebbe Highway.
  • Kisubi: Traffic will be rerouted via Nakawuka Road for access to Kampala.
  • Kajjansi Flyover: Vehicles will be diverted to Lubowa-Zana instead of using the Munyonyo Spur and Expressway.
  • Northern Bypass: Diversions will occur at Busega Flyover and slip roads to restrict access to the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway.

Passengers heading to Entebbe International Airport are encouraged to leave early to avoid delays caused by road closures and diversions.

The Uganda Police has assured the public that traffic personnel will be stationed at key junctions to guide motorists and enforce the diversions. Motorists are urged to adhere to instructions from traffic officers and use alternative routes where directed.

Authorities have called for public patience and understanding during the summit, emphasizing the importance of a smooth and secure event. “Your cooperation will ensure the success of this international summit,” police officials noted in their advisory.

The summit marks a significant occasion for Uganda, and motorists are encouraged to support efforts to host a safe and well-organized event.
