UBOS achieves 99% census coverage with reports indicating a surge in households

While speaking to the media at UBOS headquarters, Dr. Mukiza asserted that raw data showed a significant increase in the number of households with smaller household sizes, compared to the last census in 2014.

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has registered 99% coverage of the national housing and population census exercise, which kicked off on May 10, 2024.

The Bureau ended the exercise officially by May 19, 2024. However, due to the technical glitches at the start of the census exercise, the Executive Director, Dr.Chris Mukiza issued a statement extending the exercise by six more days until May 25, 2024.

According to Dr. Mukiza, by the end of the census period, said overall coverage was 99

“The remaining one percent is attributed to the residents in gates that were not accessible, working single Household members such as workers in factories and mines, as well as those who refused to be enumerated,” he said.

While speaking to the media at UBOS headquarters, Dr. Mukiza asserted that raw data showed a significant increase in the number of households with smaller household sizes, compared to the last census in 2014.

The ED noted that as the Bureau, they remain committed to the Census Roadmap as it embarks on data processing, editing, and analysis.

“The preliminary results will be disseminated on June 14, 2024, to be followed by provisional results on September 24, 2024. The final report will be published on December 24, 2024.” He added.

In line with the internationally accepted best practice, UBOS explained that the Post Enumeration Survey (PES) which is aimed at validating the coverage and quality of data collected during the main Census enumeration will be conducted in July 2024.

“PES is an independent statistical activity to be conducted by a team of experts that did not participate in the just concluded Census exercise,” he said.

On the other hand, the Bureau extended its gratitude to the Local government leaders, District/ City Planners, District/ City Information Technology Officers, District / City Communication Officers, Sub-County and Parish Chiefs, as well as Local Council 1 & 2, for effectively spearheading Census activities from the District to the Village level.

“To the enumerators and their supervisors, we shall forever be grateful for your commitment and determination towards completing the assigned enumeration areas within the allocated time.”

The 2024 census follows the 2014 one, an activity conducted every 10 years to plan for Ugandans. The country’s population as of today is estimated at 46 million.
