What eulogizing MPs said about the late Justice Aweri
Justice Aweri was a Ugandan lawyer and judge who served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Uganda, from September 2015.
Parliament has Tuesday paid tribute to the late Justice Rubby Opio Aweri, the Supreme Court Judge, who died on Wednesday, 07 December 2022 at Mulago Hospital.
The body of the late Justice Opio Aweri arrived at Parliament and was received by Speaker Anita Annet Among and several other Members of Parliament.
In a special sitting led by the Speaker held by the August house, different MPs and ministers laid their wreath to honour the late judge of the Supreme Court.
While moving the motion to pay tribute to the late, the Leader of Government Business, Robinah Nabbanja, described him as a judicial officer with an impeccable career, who served the bench with boundless dedication, utmost humility, and commitment.
The Leader of Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga, who seconded the motion, said Justice Aweri served the judiciary with exception and distinction. “He was one of the few that had very little case backlog and that to me is an exception,” Mpuuga said.
In her remarks, the Speaker, Anita Annet Among, urged legislators to emulate the contribution made by the late Justice Aweri in serving humanity.
She said Justice Aweri left society better than the way he got it and left the judiciary better than he got it.
Tony Ayoo, the Kwania County MP, proposed an amendment to the motion and asked the government through the ministry of education to construct a state-of-the-art library at Lango College, Lira in honour of the late Justice Aweri.
His amendment was adopted together with that of Yusuf Nsibambi, the MP for Mawokota South, who proposed that a major road be named after Justice Aweri. However, the Prime Minister said that the issue of the road will first be discussed by the cabinet.
Felix Okot Ogong, MP for Dokolo South, said the late Justice Aweri who was his uncle loved the environment.
“My uncle planted close to 300, 000 trees in Lango and other parts of the country…So let us plant trees in his memory,” he said.

The late joined the Judiciary in 1983 as a Grade One Magistrate and rose through the ranks to a Justice of the Supreme Court, a position he held until his death.
