Xavi Demands More Effectiveness From Lewandowski

FC Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez praised Robert Lewandowski after his league debut but he demands the Pole to be more clinical.

In the first week of La Liga, the Catalans didn’t meet expectations as they drew 0-0 with Rayo Vallecano at Spotify Camp Nou. Lewandowski, who made his first league appearance, had some chances but couldn’t find a way to score.

“He worked for the team to create a high pressure, he found solutions in building action. He controled it very well. On the other hand, we obviously needed a bit more efficiency. This was the main problem,” Xavi was quoted as saying by Polish media on Tuesday.

“I’m happy to have Lewandowski in my squad. He helps the team. Of course, Robert and we are all dissatisfied with the result. However, we must move forward, continue the process that we have started. I have no doubt that Lewandowski’s goals are only a matter of time,” the 42-year-old added.

According to Xavi, his side played below its capabilities on Saturday evening.

“I understand the disappointment because we have awakened expectations. Rayo did a great job. Ter Stegen saved our draw. We wanted to show people that we are going in the right direction. We didn’t play the best match, but I am asking the fans for patience,” the coach claimed.

“I don’t want to make excuses, just explain what happened. A draw doesn’t change anything, our goal is to win titles. We won’t say ‘OK, not this time’ just because we tied one game. If we don’t win any trophies at the end of the year, we will be dissatisfied,” Xavi concluded.

On Sunday Barcelona will play on the road against Real Sociedad in the second round.
