Equity in learning key to Uganda’s development, says Basajjabalaba

Basajjabalaba’s call comes in the wake of the release of the 2023 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) that showed girls performed much better than Boys overall.

Businessman and educationist Hassan Basajjabalaba has challenged stakeholders in the education sector to promote equity in learning for both the boy and girl child.

Basajjabalaba’s call comes in the wake of the release of the 2023 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) that showed girls performed much better than Boys overall.

In a wide – ranging interview with Charmar news, the businessman, who owns Kampala International University (KIU) and several lower level institutions, says there is a need for a fair and inclusive education system that would provide equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their background or circumstances.

“I believe that every child, regardless of their social status or economic situation, deserves a chance to succeed and fulfill their potential,” Basajjabalaba said.

He acknowledged that achieving equity in educational results would not be an easy task.

“It requires the collective effort of the entire education sector; including teachers, administrators, parents, and the government. I therefore urge all these stakeholders to work together to address the existing disparities and create a level playing field for all learners,” he said.

To promote equity, Bassajabala proposed several innovative measures, including the implementation of comprehensive scholarship programs to support students and from disadvantaged backgrounds, ensuring that they have access to quality education and resources.

He also emphasized the importance of investing in teacher training and professional development, as well as providing adequate infrastructure and learning materials to schools in remote areas.

“Promoting equity in educational results would require a shift in mindset and a change in the way education is delivered. I encourage educators to adopt creative teaching methods that cater to the individual needs of students, fostering a love for learning and encouraging critical thinking,” Basajjabalaba urged.

He stressed the importance of parental involvement in education, urging parents to actively participate in their children’s education, providing them with the necessary support and guidance to excel academically.

Relatedly, Basajjabalaba recognized the importance of entrepreneurship in driving economic growth and development in Uganda.

He noted several key strategies and initiatives to support aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners. One of his main focuses is creating an enabling environment for entrepreneurship.

“I understand that entrepreneurs need a supportive ecosystem that includes access to finance, business-friendly policies, and a simplified regulatory framework,” he noted.

Bassajabalaba also emphasized the importance of skills development and capacity building for entrepreneurs.

“I believe that providing training and mentorship programs can equip entrepreneurs with the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in their ventures. I therefore urge the government to establish entrepreneurship centers and vocational training programs to enhance entrepreneurial capabilities,” he advised.

By fostering an enabling environment, providing skills development, embracing technology, and facilitating market access, Basajjabalaba aims to create a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem that drives innovation, job creation, and economic prosperity in Uganda through his expansive group of companies.
