MARCH2PARLIAMENT: We shall not tolerate disorderly conduct, says police

The police are firmly against the planned “uncontrolled demonstrations” where youth across the country are organizing to march to parliament on July 23, 2024, to protest against corruption.

A social media campaign using the hashtags #March2Parliament and #AnitaMustGo has been launched by the youth, who are voicing their concerns about severe corruption in the House, which is supposed to protect the rights of ordinary people.

The police have issued a second warning to unknown individuals who are organizing the campaign on social media.

In a notice to the Inspector General of Police, the campaign organizers mentioned plans for a mass gathering in Kampala, which the police believe will cause major traffic congestion, disrupt trade, and disturb public order.

“To discourage the organizers from this potentially chaotic action, the Uganda Police Force (UPF) met with them on July 18, 2024, at police headquarters. After a thorough security assessment, the UPF has formally advised the organizers and urges them to follow this advice,” said Rusoke Kituuma, the police spokesperson.

In his national address on Saturday, President Museveni dismissed the campaign, saying he will never allow such demonstrations.

“That culture I see in other parts of the world where they are damaging people’s property, that cannot be tolerated,” he said.

“You hear people talking of demonstrations. But when you demonstrate in Kampala, people are selling on the roadside… are you going to step on people’s products? Do not have such ideas in your head,” he added.
