From September 2 to 6, 2024, Rwanda will host the annual Africa Food Systems Forum (AFSF), bringing together world leaders, innovators, academics, development agencies, and farmers’ organizations.

All these will come together in Rwanda to chart a path towards transforming Africa’s food systems. This year’s summit, themed “Innovate, Accelerate, and Scale: Delivering Food Systems Transformation in a Digital and Climate Era,” aims to harness innovation and technology to drive sustainable change.

Key figures, including President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and other high-profile leaders, will gather to discuss urgent actions needed to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and the Malabo Declaration’s targets by 2025.

The forum will emphasize three critical pillars: “Innovate,” focusing on new technologies and policies; “Accelerate,” underscoring the need for rapid action; and “Scale,” advocating for the expansion of successful models to ensure food security across the continent.

Amath Pathé Sene, Managing Director of AFSF, highlighted the significance of this year’s theme of the forum which is to take place in Rwanda.

“Innovating, accelerating, and scaling are the pillars upon which the future of African food systems will be built. This summit is an unparalleled platform for stakeholders to share insights and forge partnerships, addressing challenges like climate change and food insecurity.” She said.

The Prime Minister of Rwanda Edouard Ngirente who launched the forum, emphasized the role of innovation in transforming agriculture into a key economic driver, especially for youth and women.

The event will feature a rich program of plenary sessions, thematic forums, and leadership exchanges, providing a forward-looking platform for actionable dialogue and knowledge sharing.

As Africa faces pressing challenges in food security and economic inclusivity, the AFSF in Rwanda offers a beacon of hope, showcasing how collective efforts and innovative solutions can shape a more sustainable future.

The continent’s diverse climates and rich resources offer a unique opportunity to transform agricultural practices, boost productivity, and ensure that no one goes hungry.

However, achieving these goals requires a concerted effort to address structural inequalities, invest in sustainable farming technologies, and enhance market access for smallholder farmers.

By fostering inclusive growth and equitable distribution of resources, Africa can not only secure its food future but also empower its population economically, laying the groundwork for a prosperous and resilient continent.
