Gazelles begin preparations for 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket

A 13-player squad, selected by Head Coach Nicholas Natuhereza, will begin non-residential training on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2025, at the African Bible Institute in Lubowa.

The Uganda Women’s National Basketball Team, affectionately known as the Gazelles, are set to commence preparations for the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament, scheduled to take place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, from July 26th to August 3rd, 2025.

A 13-player squad, selected by Head Coach Nicholas Natuhereza, begun non-residential training on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2025, at the African Bible Institute in Lubowa. The training camp marks the official start of the Gazelles’ journey to compete on the continental stage.

“We’re focused on trying to get the roster together, fill some pieces, some gaps that were left by some players that are not available like Lydia Babirye, Maxine, and Bushira,” Coach Natuhereza stated. “We’ve been trying to update the roster from the qualifiers and also have a better team than the one we had at the last AfroBasket. Practice will help us get the players back on the same page and in shape.”

The technical team supporting Coach Natuhereza includes Assistant Coaches Julius Lutwama and Ben Komaketch, Video Analyst Michael D. Segar, Physiotherapist Flavia Nakachwa Mugabwa, Team Doctor Dr. Vicent Etyang, and Team Fitness Trainer Abdellatif Badre.

Uganda finds itself in Group C for the tournament, where they will face tough competition from Senegal and Guinea in the group stages. The 13 players selected to represent Uganda are:

  2. Nakiyingi Evelyn – Point Guard
  3. Nyamwenge Perus – Shooting Guard
  4. Namugosa Tracy – Shooting Guard
  5. Wasswa Mya – Shooting Guard
  6. Kamwada Agatha – Small Forward
  7. Jane Asinde (Captain) – Small Forward
  8. Jamila Nansikombi – Small Forward
  9. Paige Robinson – Small Forward
  10. Akello Hope Agnes – Power Forward
  11. Kirabo Sharon Nangobi – Small Forward
  12. Akullu Melissa – Center
  13. Lamunu Claire – Center

The Gazelles will be aiming to make a significant impact at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket and represent Uganda with pride.
