MTN expands network with new 079 number range to meet growing demand
New customers can now acquire SIM cards with 079 numbers at any MTN Shop or Service Centre for UGX 2,000 upon presenting a valid national ID. The company assured existing customers that the addition will not affect their current numbers or service quality.

MTN Uganda has introduced a new 079 number range to accommodate the increasing demand for mobile connectivity across the country. The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) granted the telecom giant the new prefix, covering numbers from 0790000000 to 0790999999, adding to its existing ranges of 077, 078, 031, 039, and 076.
Announcing the expansion, MTN Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to seamless communication services.
New customers can now acquire SIM cards with 079 numbers at any MTN Shop or Service Centre for UGX 2,000 upon presenting a valid national ID. The company assured existing customers that the addition will not affect their current numbers or service quality.
Subscribers with 079 numbers will enjoy the same benefits as other MTN users, including nationwide network coverage, affordable telecom services, participation in loyalty programs like MTN Prestige and MTN Senkyu, and access to MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) financial services.
With a subscriber base of 20.7 million as of June 30, 2024—including 12.5 million MoMo users and 8.8 million active data users—MTN Uganda continues to solidify its position as the country’s leading telecom provider. Operating under a National Telecommunications Operator (NTO) license, the company provides network, digital, and financial technology services, supported by over 202,000 MoMo agents, 382,000 MoMo merchants, 200 service stores, and 13 main distributors across all 134 districts.
