The commercial division reviews outcomes of banking and credit mediation fortnight

The Commercial Division of the High Court has convened an exit meeting to evaluate the outcomes of the recently concluded Post-Mediation Settlement Fortnight, an initiative aimed at resolving banking, loans and credit-related disputes through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)
The meeting, chaired by the Principal Judge, Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo, is part of the Judiciary’s continued efforts to promote mediation and improve access to faster and affordable commercial justice.
Organised by the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Registry with support from the Judicial Training Institute (JTI), the breakfast meeting brought together key stakeholders in the justice and financial sectors, including Judges of the Commercial Division, the Industrial Court, judicial officers from the lower bench, senior Judiciary management, representatives from the Bank of Uganda, chief executives of commercial banks, legal departments of banks, the Uganda Bankers Association, accredited mediators and advocates.
Among those attending are the Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego; Chairperson of the JTI Governing Council and Supreme Court Justice, Justice Mike Chibita; Executive Director of JTI, Justice Prof. Andrew Khaukha; and Chief Registrar, Her Worship Agnes Alum.
The Post-Mediation Settlement Fortnight specifically targeted banking, loans and credit cluster cases, with the aim of reducing case backlog, promoting negotiated settlements and strengthening confidence in Uganda’s commercial justice system.
The exit meeting provides a platform for participants to assess achievements recorded during the mediation exercise, share experiences from successful settlements, discuss challenges encountered and develop recommendations to improve future mediation programmes.
The proceedings are being moderated by Her Worship James Ereemye Jumire Mawanda, the Judiciary’s Public Relations Officer.
The Judiciary continues to encourage the use of ADR mechanisms, including mediation, as a means of delivering timely and efficient justice while easing pressure on courts.
