A number of 123 Lawyers enrolled as advocates of the High Court in Kampala
The ceremony was presided over by the Chief Registrar, Agnes Alum, marking her first enrolment ceremony since taking office.
A total of 123 lawyers have been formally enrolled as Advocates of the High Court after signing the Roll of Advocates during a ceremony held at the Court of Appeal Building Conference Hall at the Judiciary Headquarters in Kampala.
The ceremony was presided over by the Chief Registrar, Agnes Alum, marking her first enrolment ceremony since taking office.
While congratulating the newly admitted advocates, Alum welcomed them to the legal profession and reminded them that their new status comes with both privileges and responsibilities.
“You are now free to enjoy not only the privileges and benefits of being an advocate but also the responsibilities that come with the profession,” she said.
The Chief Registrar described law as an honourable profession built on public trust and responsibility. However, she noted growing concerns over declining standards of integrity and professionalism among some members of the legal fraternity, particularly young lawyers.
She challenged the new advocates to restore confidence in the profession through ethical conduct, professionalism and commitment to justice.
Alum also highlighted the decline in mentorship within the legal profession, urging senior lawyers to continue guiding upcoming advocates while encouraging the new entrants to actively seek mentorship.
She reminded the advocates that their role goes beyond representing clients, noting that as officers of the court, they have a duty to support the administration of justice in line with Article 126(2) of the Constitution.
The Chief Registrar encouraged the new advocates to remain diligent, prepare thoroughly for cases, continuously improve their legal knowledge and uphold values of honesty, competence, transparency and professionalism.
She further urged them to contribute to society through pro bono services and community work, saying advocates have an important role in promoting access to justice.
Representing the Secretary to the Law Council, Principal State Attorney Naomi Kyampaire congratulated the advocates and reminded them that admission to the Bar marks the beginning of continuous professional growth.
She encouraged them to pursue further legal education, seek mentorship, improve communication skills, identify areas of specialisation and embrace innovation in legal practice.
Meanwhile, Uganda Law Society Treasurer Arthur Isiko, representing the Society’s Vice President, thanked parents and guardians for supporting the advocates throughout their legal journey.
He reminded the new lawyers that they are trustees of justice and officers of the court, urging them to uphold professional ethics, avoid shortcuts and build careers founded on integrity, humility and public service.
The ceremony moderator, Fidelis Otawo, told the advocates that signing the Roll of Advocates was not just a procedural step but a solemn commitment to uphold justice and the values of the legal profession.
