DPP takes over Besigye case following Supreme Court ruling

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has taken over the case of detained opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, following a Supreme Court ruling that declared the trial of civilians in military courts unconstitutional.
Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi confirmed that Besigye’s file, along with those of other civilians, has been transferred from the Court Martial to the DPP’s office.
A team of prosecutors has been assigned to review the investigative files and determine the next course of action.
Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, was recently arraigned before a civilian court but was sent back to prison.
His legal team has since filed a habeas corpus application, arguing that his detention is unlawful and that he has been denied access to better medical care outside prison. The High Court is set to rule on the application by February 25.
