A bid put together by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania has won the race to host Africa’s premier footballing everm the Africa Cup of Nation (Afcon), in 2027.
This will be the first time that any East African nation hosts the showpiece. To achieve this, the three East African nations had to pool resources together in a single bid.
The Confederation of African Football CAF) approved the bid in Egypt. Only 18 out of the 54 countries that subscribe to CAF have been able to host AFCON.
This is a historic score East Africa. While the three countries and Rwanda and DR Congo have played at AFCON several times, they haven’t been able to win the tournament. Uganda came closest when it lost the 1978 final to Ghana.
