Egypt defeats South Sudan in opening match of Zone 5 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket qualifiers

Five countries will be battling for one single slot at the 2023 FIBA Women's AfroBasket, namely Uganda, Kenya, Egypt, South Sudan and Rwanda.

Egypt started their campaign on a winning note, beating South Sudan in the opening match of the Zone 5 Federation of International Basketball Associations (FIBA) Women’s AfroBasket qualifiers on Tuesday.

“We are very happy to start the qualifiers with a win since this competition is played on a round-robin basis. We hope to keep improving as the tournament gets on,” Egyptian head coach Ehab Elalfy told Xinhua after beating South Sudan 83-68 at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium in Kampala.

Acheil Marko Tac, South Sudan’s player who scored 13 points told Xinhua that losing the first game will instead motivate them to perform better.

“We made some mistakes and need to correct them ahead of our second match,” added Marko Tac.
