Electoral Commission chief emphasizes human rights in policing elections

The collaboration between the Electoral Commission and the Uganda Police underscores a commitment to ensuring free, fair, and peaceful elections in Uganda.

Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), today addressed Unit Commanders of the Kampala Metropolitan Police at a workshop seminar focused on human rights-based policing of elections.

The seminar, held at the Uganda Police Headquarters in Naguru, aimed to reinforce the critical role of the police in upholding democratic principles during the electoral process.

In his keynote address, Justice Byabakama highlighted the crucial connection between effective policing and the integrity of elections.

“Police is a key stakeholder in the electoral process, playing a vital role in ensuring its integrity, credibility, and the protection of citizens’ rights throughout the electoral cycle,” he stated.

The seminar emphasized the importance of adopting a human rights-based approach to policing elections, ensuring that law enforcement activities respect and protect the rights of all citizens, including voters, candidates, and journalists.

The collaboration between the Electoral Commission and the Uganda Police underscores a commitment to ensuring free, fair, and peaceful elections in Uganda.

By equipping police unit commanders with the knowledge and tools necessary for human rights-based policing, the seminar aimed to foster an environment where citizens can participate in the electoral process without fear or intimidation.
